What is an SR-22?
This is a filing made with the DMV showing proof of insurance. It is a certificate of financial responsibility. The “SR” in SR-22 stands for safety and responsibility. With this certificate, your license is activated again.
When is it required?
You should get it only when the court requires or is required by the state for a major violation (s). Some examples of when you need to get one are: DUI convictions, three fines or points on your driving record within a year, reckless driving, or being involved in an accident without having auto insurance. If one of the above occurred, then your license may be suspended or revoked. It is possible to obtain a restricted license by obtaining insurance from these and you have to file with the DMV, which is done electronically. Check with your local DMV office to see if you are eligible for a restricted license here.
