Smog Check

Do I need Smog Check to pay for plates and name change?

The DMV will mail your registration renewal notice and indicate if your vehicle needs verification. If you are required to do so and you don’t, even if you paid your registration fees, you will not receive your new registration or sticker until the DMV has received the smog information.

Currently, inspections are required for smog certifications for all vehicles, except diesel, from 1997 onwards, or with a gross vehicle weight (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs, electric vehicles with natural gas of more than 14,000 lbs. , motorcycles, trailers or gasoline, vehicles from 1975 onwards.

Vehicles that are registered in areas subject to the biennial smog certification program must submit evidence of a smog certification every two years upon renewal of registration. Vehicles six years or less of model will pay an annual rate for reduction of smog during the first six years of registration instead of having to submit a biennial smog certification.

The 4 year Rule

When transferring a vehicle that is four or less model years, a smog certification is not required. The 4 year rule or less of the previous model does not apply to vehicles with diesel engines. A fee will be charged for the new owner’s smog transfer. When a vehicle is more than four model years, a seller must provide evidence of a current smog certification, except when one of the following situations occurs:

  • The transfer occurs between a spouse, domestic partner, brother, son, father, grandparent or grandchild.
  • A biennial air pollution certification was submitted to the DMV within 90 days prior to the date of vehicle transfer.
